Commentary on the news feature

It started with nursing schools. That was our topic. And from that, me and my groupmates to come up with the angle, The Impact of the Leakage Issue in the June 2006 Nursing Board Exam to the Different Nursing Colleges in Cebu City.

From that topic, I wrote a news feature, focusing (supposedly) on one angle, which is, where will the nursing graduates/ board passers be after what happened? It is (supposedly again) about the different paths those passers gone through after the exam and what would happen to other nursing graduates. Thus the title, Nursing Grad: The Path They Have to Walk.

I was inspired to make that title from the theme of the recent MassComm Days (MassComm Grad: Asa ka Padung?). Haha. I know it's silly but it fits my angle so I used it.

Hmmm. Since it's my work, I will criticize it entirely. Haha. I shall say that it's poorly organized. It comes along with my other tasks so I had only a little time to finalize it. Though I identified a certain angle, it seems that my article branched out into many other angles. Maybe it could have been worked out if I tightened the article but it's loosely-composed. I can't really identify if it has a poor substance because I put up several informations from our notes.

However, I think that it's informative, though. I cited several reliable sources. Though I fail to emphasize my angle, I think I have given justice to my title.

I still think my article could have been better with more editing and tightening. Rating? Good but unsatisfactory.

Nursing Grad: The Path They have to Walk

Nursing Grad: The Path They Have to Walk

Who would have thought that flying abroad could be as difficult as taking final exams? It is for the nursing board examinees of June 2006.

During the June 2006 Nursing Licensure Board Exams, it was found out upon evidences that there was a leakage in the Test 3 (Nursing Practice) and Test 5 (Pyschiatric Nursing) of the exam. Though they were able to take the oath as licensed nurses, there is still an issue that bothers the passers.

On January 2007, the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) declared that board passers from the June 2006 exam cannot work abroad, specifically in the United States (US) without retaking the exam. The CGFNS is an institution that offers visa screens for licensed Filipino nurses to go to the US.

This shook the passers of the board exams including Winjilyn Paculanan.

Paculanan, 21, is a nursing graduate from Cebu Doctor's University and has passed the board exams and is now working at Perpetual Succuor Hospital. She will be retaking the board exam this year to be able to fly abroad.

"I dream of providing my family a comfortable life and it is undeniably true that the US can provide a greater income than here. That is why I will retake (the exam)," lamented Paculanan.

The purpose of the retake is to validate the the passing grade of the passers and "prove before the CGFNS their qualifications to exercise the profession in the US." (The Manila Bulletin, March 9, 2007-Friday)

Professional Regulations Commission of Region VII Director Atty. Dan Malayang explained that the passers can practice their profession here in the Philippines since they are all licensed nurses already. But if abroad is their destination, then they will have to retake Tests III and V of the board exam.

The government ensured to shoulder the P900 fee for the voluntary retake of the exams. (The Manila Bulletin, MArch 9,2007- Friday)

To some universities, they try to help their graduates by absorbing them in their institution.

Liliosa Lumbab, dean of the College of Nursing of Velez College said that they were not affected by the issue on cheating because they accommodated their graduates as beginner staff nurse in Velez Hospital.

Same is true with the Cebu Normal University (CNU) graduates. Mrs. Liduvina Aliño, a faculty in CNU also said that they absorbed their graduates. "In fact, we have eight Clinical Instuctors (C.I.) form our 2006 gradutes," Aliño added.

With the desire of most nursing graduates to settle for greener pastures in the arms of the US, the issue pose a risk to every nurse. As for Paculanan, "I will retake the exams. I'd rather risk now than risk my future again."

the root of all these

Having a blog requires so much time and not to mention, money! How I wish I have a laptop with me so I can just log-in anytime I want. Unfortunately, I don't have one. But it's weird how I got into having a blog and tell (or write) my life stories where anyone from the net can view it! This is all because of our Journ 121 course.

Journ 121 is described as "the Electronic Newsroom." From the description itself, one can perceive that it's more of using the computers. It is indeed. We were even encouraged to publish online. But it was hard of course since there are only a few online publications.

One of our requirements in this course is to have a personal blog. Not that personal actually, but simply a blog wherein we can publish our insights or assignements in Journ. That is why, tentenenen.....I have my tabulas blog! Yeheey!

I shall say that this course has cost me lot! I mean literal cost. Since it's more of "electronic," I have to update more often my blog. It costs my time in the internet cafe and the printing.

I had another blog, a web blog. But I created this new site since that one was more of a very personal one. Here, I chose to tackle topics about my academic life, though there are some instances that I mislead the topic. But basically, this is more of whatr I've been through as a Mass Communication student. I included here my published articles since it's part of my academic achievements.

What I did not expect in this course is to have a fieldwork. I use to do fieldworks during my course in Journ 102 (News Feature Writing) because that was the nature of that subject, but not in (Journ) 121.

A few weeks ago, we were asked to do a special assignment about certain topics in which we will make a news feature about it and post here in our blog.(I will post it later on.) It was not easy! It competes with our other responsibilities. It was exciting though. I got to met and go to places where I was not able to visit before. I was able to enter the College of Nursing in USC, CDU and meet and greet the director of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) in Region 7! Fine. They are not celebrities worth screaming for but mingling with them was "something" already. I got to deal new personalities and attitudes.

I also got the chance to visit blogs of interesting people. They were featured in TIME magazine and the links of their blogs too. When I visited their sites and read their posts, I felt enlightened. There are some posts that served as eye-opener to me and made me realize how the world outside my own concepts.

Though this course drove me to spent a lot, I should say that it has widened my knowledge on areas of life and broadened my scope of thinking and deographical places in Cebu City.Haha. I learned several things and helped me understand certain issues.

Journ 121 may end next week, but I think my blog shall remain.....

Spending Summer

Spending Summer

Hey Kidsters!

A few more days to go and it will be summer vacation already! Do you have plans on how and where to spend your vacation? Maybe you’re thinking of going out-of-town or swimming. That’s fun! And it is a very relaxing thing to do after months of studying.

But there are actually better things to do this summer to make your vacation fun and worthwhile. Let me give you pieces of advice:

* Enroll in summer lessons and workshops. You can enroll in a dancing, singing, acting or art workshops that will help you enhance your skills. You can also take Karate do classes, piano lessons and many others!

* Do advance studies. To prepare yourself for the next school year, you can read your books ahead. This may sound boring, but doing advance studies will help you understand your lessons better. Plus, you can participate actively during discussions.

* Participate in community activities. Since it is summer, your parish or barangay may have prepared recreational activities for kids like you! Involve yourself so that you can interact with other kids in your community.

* Help your parents at home. Another way of spending your vacation without spending your parents’ money is to simply help them with household chores. Aside from the help you give, it is also a good way to bond with them.

See? Vacation is not only about the beach, out-of-town trips or staying home. There are actually many productive things you can do! Now, how will you spend your summer vacation?

hell week!!!

I guess there could be no more pressed days than semestral ends!

It is during these times that I am really into cramming (especially that the deadline is approaching). Somehow, I am relieved that we only have one written exam for this sem. But it actually did not make much difference! All deadline are to be submitted this week! Arghhhh.... Most of these projects are by group and I don't have the same groups in all subjects so I'm really having a difficult time managing my all those.

Tomorrow is another day. By morning, I have to get the evaluation sheets for our History 2. speaking of, let me shift the topic first. I just arrived from our History 2 presentation. It was a show highlighting a dance drama and fashion show. It was held at Elizabeth Mall. What did I do? I just dance a Parasol Dance-- you know the one of the Japanese. I should say we were "cute" then. We looked like Japanese-- wearing a Kimono/ bathrobe plus a parasol and fan in the tune of a Japanese music. I think it was boring though but we stood out, maybe because of our charm(?) Haha.

Now where was I? Oh yeah. After the evluation, I'm off to go to a series of interviews for our SocSci paper. It was a relief when we heard that the deadline was extended! Nabunotan ako ng isang tinik. And then by afternoon I'll be heading toward's Kimy's place for our recording! Long day, huh!

This is where we get so haggard. We are more of fieldworks and paperworks than exams. Yah, exams are very depressing but fieldworks are more pressing and expensive!! Sigh. Well, maybe this is another training for me as a MassComm stude.

Oh yeah! I remember. I still have to make a post for my experiences in my course in Journ 121 plus a news feature about the special report we did. Gosh! Anyway, that's it for now. Oh! I'll be posting later on another article. Hehe.
